Weigel’s Family Christmas: A Very Merry Holiday
True to the Volunteer state, we make a difference in our community by giving back. Weigel’s Family Christmas, now in its 17th year, has helped 3,400 children in need. Weigel’s Family Christmas was born out of a desire to give back to the community, more specifically, to our neighbors whose children might not experience a joyous Christmas.
Having served on the Salvation Army board for over 40 years, Billy Weigel and two of his children started Weigel’s Family Christmas in December 1999. Weigel’s Family Christmas enables kids-in-need to have a jubilant Christmas experience. Each child is gifted with $150 from the Weigel’s family to spend as they wish. The kids are chaperoned by volunteers for a day of fun, starting with breakfast, then a $150 shopping spree and ending with a hot lunch. The first Weigel’s Family Christmas event started with six children chosen by the Salvation Army. Over the past 16 years, the program has expanded to 200 children and over 400 volunteers annually.
Our stores serve as a place where neighbors are serving neighbors throughout greater Knoxville. Weigel’s is steeped in a hard work ethic and community-minded service. Weigel’s Family Christmas is one of many examples on how we give back to our community.
